If we talk about Rajasthan and Jaipur festivals, then the words are not enough to express the festivity, grandeur and colors of the festivals. Elephant festival of Jaipur is in this category. It is celebrated on the eve of Holi festival (a festival of colors).

When Jaipur was ruled by Rajput kings, the king was used to sat on the elephant to play Holi with the people of Jaipur. Elephant Festival of Jaipur is the traditional and majestic symbol of chic. The elephant festival starts with the procession of very beautifully adorned elephants. Various folk dances of Rajasthan also performed in elephant festival of Rajasthan. Foreign tourists sit on the elephants at the end of the festival and play Holi with each other and with Jaipurites. It's really a wonderful, grand and amazing festival. Foreign tourists participate in elephant festival of Jaipur in such a huge number that the hotels of Jaipur become full every year one month prior to the festival.

भारतीय पर्यटन हर प्रकार से बहुआयामी पर्यटन है; विशेष तौर पर यदि उत्सवों, मेलों, छुट्टियाँ बिताने के लिये यादगार जगह और रंग-बिरंगेपन की बात करें तो यह गलत नहीं होगा. इसमें भी यदि राजस्थान और जयपुर की बात की जाये तो यहाँ के त्योहारों की उमंग, भव्यता और रंगों का वर्णन करने के लिये शब्द ही कम पड़ने लगते हैं. जयपुर का हाथी महोत्सव भी इन शानदार त्योंहारों में से एक है. यह होली की पूर्व संध्या पर मनाया जाता है.

जयपुर में जब राजपूत राजाओं का राज था, तब राजा हाथी पर बैठ कर जयपुर के लोगों के साथ होली खेला करते थे. जयपुर का हाथी महोत्सव उसी पारंपरिक राजसी ठाठ का प्रतीक है. हाथी महोत्सव की शुरुआत बेहद ख़ूबसूरती से सजे-धजे हाथियों की शोभायात्रा से होती है. फिर इस उत्सव में राजस्थान के विभिन्न लोक-नृत्य भी प्रस्तुत किये जाते हैं. हाथी महोत्सव के अंत में विदेशी पर्यटक हाथियों पर बैठ कर एक-दूसरे के साथ व जयपुरवासियों के साथ गुलाल से होली खेलते हैं.
